Descrizione: Made up of 14 members—10 academic research groups, 3 SMEs and 1 big pharma—from 7 different member states, EPITRON is funded by the European Union under the 6th Framework Programme (LSHC-CT-2005-518417).
The EPITRON consortium seeks to define and validate the concept of epigenetic cancer treatment. This will be accomplished by: i) defining the epigenetic alterations by which cancer cells deviate from their normal counterparts, ii) identifying novel therapeutic targets and treatment paradigms from these analyses in order to iii) generate novel epi-drugs and validate them in suitable model systems.

Descrizione: Research interest is in the unraveling of the molecular basis of cell behaviour emanating from the genetic and epigenetic code contained in the nucleus in the context of health and disease. The major focus is on the regulation of transcription in mammals, as well as Plasmodium falciparum, the causative agent of malaria. The latter includes the aim to develop a malaria vaccine that blocks development of Plasmodium falciparum in mosquitoes, consequently preventing transmission of the disease. Novel technology developments range from single molecule studies through to genome wide elucidation of genetic and epigenetic pathways and mechanisms.

Clinical Epigenetics studies epigenetic changes in normal and diseased cells in response to internal or external factors with the aim to translate basic epigenetic research into diagnosis, therapy and prevention.

Clinical Epigenetics publishes original research and reviews covering epigenetic mechanisms and principles as well as reports on defects of epigenetic regulation and its relation to human disease, diagnosis and therapy. Epigenetic research in disease model organisms is particularly welcome.
